New host, new plugin, new updates

I’m using a new host (https://www.linode.com/) on an Ubuntu-based VPS. REALLY liking the flexibility that a VPS can provide vs. a shared hosting provider. I strongly recommend Linode if you are in the market for one. I was thinking of documenting the setup but got to distracted. Maybe next time.

I’ve also recently discovered a new plugin for automating WordPress backups called XCloner-WordPress. This is a very powerful plugin that allows you to create WordPess file backups as well as MySQL backups and upload them to various cloud-based solutions, such as Dropxbox of OneDrive. Definitely check this out if you need (should!) to make sure your WordPress site is being backed-up just in case anything happens.

I’ve been very, very busy with other life things lately but I’ll likely be posting some new stuff soon, likely some PowerShell related things I’ve been working on.

In memoriam: Ilor Tamm (1926-2017)

My father passed away on February 1st, 2017, he was 91 years old.

I came across an article that was written about him in an Estonian newspaper, but unfortunately, I do not speak or read Estonian.
Thanks to the help of a very kind Reddit user (r1243) I was able to get an English translation of the article.

Below is the translated version (in English and Spanish), with a few minor adjustments made.

A bit of housekeeping

Yes, it has been quiet lately. I haven’t been updating much, but I have not neglected this site! I’ve gone through and modified a few little things here and there which you may or may not notice. The important things that have changed:

Some new posts will come here soon with some other cool things I have been tinkering with.

Enable Flight Mode on Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU)

So I recently purchased a Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU) and as a good geek, the first thing I did was wipe the drive, deleting all traces of any Lenovo pre-installed software…which was not much.
Anyways, the machine runs great except one small feature that I could not get to work which was enabling the flight mode toggle on my keyboard.
Would I actually ever use this? Not sure? Could I simply not enable/disable flight mode manually? Yes. Did it bug the crap out of me that it was not working? Absolutely.

Setup a private VPN on OpenWRT 15.05.01 using StrongSwan

This is a guide that I’ve put together using various different articles and tutorials I’ve found and put them all together in one package.

The end result is your very own private VPN server running off of your OpenWRT 15.05.01 router using RSA certificates for authentication. With a few small tweaks you can use username/password log authentication but I preferred to go the certificates route. These steps should work fine with most modern clients – I have personally tested this with Windows 10 (Version 1607 OS Build 14393.10) and on iOS 9.3.4 both with and without certificates and it works great.

Let’s begin!

Hi there! I’m still around…

So I have been pretty busy as of late and haven’t updated this website in about a month :/

I’ve decided to move all my scripts/code over to GitHub (link: https://github.com/obs0lete) for easier maintenance/updates. I will be (slowly) getting to this as time permits.

I am also going to be doing a new system build soon. Not sure if I will detail the setup process, but I have been toying with the idea. For the curious, below are the specs:

  • Intel Core i7 6700k 4.0 GHz CPU
  • Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
  • Asus Z170-A Motherboard
  • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB DDR4-3000 Memory
  • Corsair CX Series CX750M 750W ATX 12V 80 Plus Bronze Modular Power Supply
  • Corsair Carbide 300R Case
  • Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD
  • Samsung SH-224FB/BSBE Internal 24x DVD Writer
  • AMD Radeon R9 390X video card

Weather information in Powershell console – Updated

With inspiration from https://www.reddit.com/r/PowerShell/comments/3zf0b8/getweather_get_the_current_weather_of_your/ and http://wttr.in/ I’ve written a function for Powershell where you can get current weather conditions whenever you launch the console!

Make sure to add this function to your Powershell profile and call it via Get-Weather to have it automatically run.

You can find the script on my GitHub: https://github.com/obs0lete/Get-Weather

MiniDLNA paths in OpenWRT

I’ve recently made the switch from using DD-WRT to OpenWRT (https://openwrt.org/) which is essentially what DD-WRT is based on. I now have a much leaner, cleaner and more control over my router.

One thing that has bugged me was that I decided to enable MiniDLNA on the router but was having issues getting it to recognize folders correctly.

The note on the miniDLNA setup screen read:

Set this to the directory you want scanned. If you want to restrict the directory to a specific content type, you can prepend the type (‘A’ for audio, ‘V’ for video, ‘P’ for images), followed by a comma, to the directory (eg. media_dir=A,/mnt/media/Music). Multiple directories can be specified.
